The German Spitz initially descended
from the Nordic herding dogs like Samoyed’s which were most likely taken to
Germany and Holland by the Vikings they were crossed with herding and shepherd
breeds to finally develop the Spitzy type. Literature on the German Spitz dates
back to 1450 but the breed it self can be traced back to the Stone Age some
6,000 years ago.

A white Pomeranian, In appearance, little tiny “Gena” Queen Victoria’s dog.
Though unknown in Britain until the 1700’s when it became the
latest fashion accessory when Queen Victorian acquired the Spitz form known as
a Pomeranian. The German’s wanted different names for each of the sizes as it
was a vast breed (Pomeranians were the same size as today’s German Spitz Mittel’s).
Eventually the Spitz was breed to different types and sizes. When Queen
Victoria was on the throne the Spitz dogs were gradually bred smaller and
smaller until the toy breed Pomeranian was established. Although there were
attempts to eradicate the larger sizes occasionally a large Pomeranian would
appear in a litter, this was due to the ancestry of the breed being all
different sizes. The German Spitz went largely from Britain’s popularity during
the two word wars.
The first German Spitz after this was
imported back into Britain, the breeder wanted to re-introduce the white
Pomeranian. The present German Spitz comes in a variety of colours and two
sizes recognized in the UK (Klein and Mittel) breeding between the sizes is
strictly forbidden in the UK.
Until
1994 the German Spitz breed was still classified as a rare breed by the kennel
club.
I myself remember watching a breed similar to what I now believe may
have been the German Spitz breed pushing prams and being like babies in
prams in circus acts on television.
